Experience Wheelchair Tennis

Freshwater Tennis Club will be hosting a 5-day coaching and introduction program during Disability Action Week 10-16 September 2017. The program will include coaching sessions for coaches and teachers, coaching for players and school visits. This will launch the Run & Roll program designed so people of all abilities can play together using the modified rules of wheelchair tennis. The benefit of this program will be to bring people together and create social connections through tennis.

Event Calendar

Location: Freshwater Tennis Club

12:00: Event opens

1:00-1:30: Official opening; Welcome by the dignitaries; Motivational talks by Heath Davidson and Keegan Oh-Chee

1:30-2:00: On-court exhibition matches; Run & Roll doubles tennis; VIP’s and juniors playing alongside the Paralympians

2:00-5:00“Have a Go” community involvement; Wheelchairs available—anyone can have a go

9:30-11:30: School visit: Woree State High School
R Block “The Shelter”, Windarra St entrance (Opp the Disaster Management Centre) sign in prior to the event

The goal is to have families invited from surrounding schools with either an adult or a child with a disability. Siblings and carers/parents will experience playing tennis together.

As a Pilot 5 week program we are offering a free Thursday 4-5pm group Hot Shots tennis session for kids with a disability and their siblings, parents and carers. This will be at Freshwater Tennis Club. The first session will be on the 10th August

Format for the session

  • Players share their life’s journey
  • Video presentation
  • Exhibition doubles tennis match where two experienced tennis students partner with the Paralympian players and play for points Run & Roll

All are invited to participate, we will co-ordinate players in wheelchairs partnering with able bodied players. The experience will be all-inclusive, able bodied are welcome to play a round in a wheelchair.

5:00: Mixed doubles exhibition match Run & Roll, ladies pairing with Heath and Keegan; One point shootout tournament played in wheelchairs for anyone to have a go; Men’s doubles Exhibition match as a finale

FAQ

I have a disability but I'm not a wheelchair user, can I come?

Yes, you sure can. Everyone is welcome to this event.

Can friends and family of disabled people participate?

Yes, and you can either use your legs or have a go in a wheelchair to experience what it’s like.

My child is in a wheelchair. He is only five. Can he participate?

Yes. As long as your child can fit comfortably into an available wheelchair they can play. Wheelchair tennis is suitable for all ages, 5-95.
